London Open City, Somerset House, closes Sun 27th April 2008

Design for London exhibition, london Open City, provides a new perspective on the capital while suggesting a routre on how to release the potential of London’s public spaces and streets.  The exhibition shows the changes and adaptions that could be made to London to improve and transform how we use our city in addition to addressing current and future needs. London Open City looks at how connections between different parts of the city can be improved; how a better balance can be achieved between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as well as suggestions of how to remove the physical and psychological barriers to movement through the city.  It also explores new ways of activating spaces that are lost or under used in order to accommodate varied and intensive use. It shows how design for London is working through the 100 Public Spaces programme to create new public spaces while enhancing existing ones.  The exhibition also demonstrates how the East London Green Grid, the first phase of a city-wide network of inerlinked green spaces, is a key initiative in creating a greener city, by unlocking one of London’s natural assets. www.somersethouse.org.uk/visual_arts/london_open_city/default.asp
